What are the #goodtimes?

#goodtimes is an IRC channel located on EFnet which has been in operation since ’95. It’s a geeky online community of Newfoundland users, the majority of which are from Grand Falls. Over the years we’ve made a few community sites, this blog is our latest manifestation. For more info check out #goodtimes on the Jo’s wiki or our first article.

Why is this blog so awesome?

Well, that’s because of the awesome people behind it. We are Newfoundlanders, we are geeks and we are proud on both counts. We aim to reflect those values thereby allowing a web community for like minded weirdos. So the aim of the blog is to expand the sense of community we’ve built in our IRC channel into a larger web environment. Think online coffee shop.

Are the ideas presented on this blog representative?

We sure hope not. We are striving to embrace a sense Newfoundland geek culture and part of that requires a willingness to stand on individually important issues. We encourage a good debate. It’s about acceptance of each other’s weirdness while recognizing that we won’t always agree.

How can I help?

Simple. Read up and tell us what you think. Let us know if you really like or don’t like something as we adapt. The goal here is understanding a shared sense of values, so that means we need to know when we get it right. The best thing you can do is sign up for an account and leave comments!

How do I set a Profile Picture?

WordPress uses a service called ‘Gravatars’ for profile pictures which is required for this site. Just go to http://www.gravatar.com and setup a New Account. Pictures setup there automatically appear here – make sure to use the same email! If you’re having troubles there’s a guide.

How do I make a New Post to the front page?

We are generally looking for geeky and/or Newfoundland style entries.

To post, you must be logged in, or in the Dashboard. Just click Log In on the main blog page and it’ll take you right into the Dashboard where you can click New Post (on top of the page) or click Posts (on the left side of the page). If you’re already logged in on the main page, you’ll see a Site Admin link, click that and it will bring you into the Dashboard. Your entry will be held for a short duration for editing and admin approval.
